Director identification number - apply by 30 November 2022

Directors need to apply for their director identification number (director ID) by 30 November 2022.

You may be aware that all current directors need to apply for a director identification number (director ID). This is a unique identifier given to a director who has verified their identity and will help prevent the use of false or fraudulent director identities.

Directors who were appointed under the Corporations Act before 1 November 2021 must apply by 30 November 2022. The link below provides some information about the director ID:

We cannot apply for a director ID on your behalf – you must apply yourself. The fastest way to do this is online using the myGovID app to log in to ABRS online. Please use the link below for a step-by-step process for setting up your myGovID if you do not already have one, and the link also includes the instructions for using your myGovID to apply for your director ID:

Setting up the myGovID requires at least two of the following Australian identity documents:

  • Drivers licence

  • Passport

  • Birth certificate

  • Visa

  • Citizenship certificate

  • ImmiCard

  • Medicare card

You will also need your tax file number (not essential, but recommended), residential address as held by ATO and information from two documents to prove your identity.

If you cannot set up a myGovID, you will need to phone to apply for a director ID (13 62 50) and you will be asked to verify your identity using:

  • your tax file number (optional)

  • your residential address as held by the ATO

  • answers to 2 questions based on details the ATO knows about you

  • a primary (eg Australian full birth certificate, Australian passport (may be expired up to 3 years), Australian citizenship certificate, Immicard, Visa) and secondary (Medicare card, Australian driver’s licence) Australian identity document

You can also request a paper application.

It is important to apply for your director ID before the due date of 30 November 2022 as it is a criminal offence if you do not apply on time. Maximum penalties that apply are $13,200 (criminal) and $1,100,000 (civil).

We hope this helps with your requirement to apply for a director ID. Please feel free to contact KPI Business Advisory with any queries regarding that above process and we will be happy to assist.
