Fair Work Commission has announced a 1.75% increase to minimum wages

In July 2020, the Fair Work Commission (FWC) announced a 1.75 per cent increase to the national minimum wage, following its Annual Wage Review.  The 1.75 per increase also applies to employees covered by awards.

The start date for the increase depends on which group the award falls under, it is therefore crucial to know which award your employees are working under, or if they are working under an award at all.

Please refer to the start dates for the 3 groups below and what awards are within each group:

  • Group one - 1 July 2020 covers awards such as Frontline Heath Care & Social Assistance Workers; Teachers and Child Care; and other Essential Services.

  • Group two -1 November 2020 covers awards such as Construction; Manufacturing and many other industries.

  • Group three - 1 February 2021 awards such as Accommodation and Food Services; Arts and Recreation Services; Aviation; Retail and Tourism.

For employees who are award and agreement free – they need to be paid a minimum of $19.84 per hour from 1 July 2020.
